What changes your out-of-pocket cost
- Private insurance. Many employer plans cover semaglutide for type 2 diabetes; coverage for weight management varies and may need prior authorization. Your share is usually a co-pay percentage plus the dispensing fee.
- Provincial plans. Public drug plans set their own criteria. Brand tirzepatide products are not publicly covered.
- Manufacturer savings cards. Novo Nordisk Care, mymounjaro and myzepbound reduce cash or co-pay costs for eligible patients. They usually cannot be combined with public plans.
- Generic substitution. Where a generic is available and your prescriber allows substitution, your plan may pay only the generic price.
- Dispensing fees. They vary by chain and province. Ask for a price including the fee.
Track the real number over a year
Pen prices, co-pays and savings-card amounts change every few months. The easiest way to know your true cost is to log each fill: what the pharmacy charged, what insurance paid, and how many doses it covers. Glidedose does that math and shows your monthly spend and when your supply will run out.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Ozempic per month in Canada without insurance?
In October 2026 most Canadian pharmacies charge roughly $250 to $340 cash for a four-week supply of brand-name Ozempic, including the dispensing fee. Costco and Walmart are usually at the low end. Novo Nordisk also offers a savings card that lowers the price for people paying cash.
Is generic semaglutide cheaper?
Yes. Apotex launched Apo-Semaglutide in May 2026 with a wholesale price of $78.14 per four-week supply, about a third of brand Ozempic. Pharmacy cash prices reported in October 2026 are around $83 to $103 per pen.
Do provincial drug plans cover GLP-1 medications?
Public plans generally list semaglutide for type 2 diabetes under specific criteria, not for weight management. Mounjaro and Zepbound are not covered by provincial plans. Coverage rules differ by province, so check with your plan or pharmacist.
Why does my pharmacy charge more than another one?
The drug price is regulated, but dispensing fees and markups vary by chain and province. The difference for the same pen can be $50 or more per month.
